From the Mouth of Sierra Leone River

Flagged slave ships from Britain, America, Spain, Portugal and other European nations navigated around the middle ground in the Sierra Leone river to begin the inhumane journeys referred to as the Middle Passage across the Atlantic. Naval Ships of British soldiers and Kroo-Men (Kru-men) similarly navigate around the middle ground of the same river to patrol the seas and end the factories and slave trade in 1860.

Kroo-men settled and built a community centered around Krootown road in Freetown where their descendant continue to thrive for improve standard of living. History of the Kroo-Court

Krootown.

Initially ships operated out of the Cape of Good Hope but in 1819 a separate West Coast of Africa Station (Freetown) was created. By 1825 there were seven ships on station, manned by around 660 men. This grew to around 25 vessels by 1845 manned by around 2000 British sailors and nearly 1,000 'Kroomen', experienced African fishermen. http://abolition.e2bn.org/slavery_155.html
